On Matt Wagner’s ‘Grendel’ (a translation) (05)
First Act: Devil by the Deed (I)
After that three-issue-tale, it seemed that Grendel concept was over... Until the following year when Matt Wagner took up his creation again, using it as backup story for the series which had became his first success: Mage.
With the title of Devil by the Deed, he remade Hunter Rose’s story, but using a different format, similar to the one that was utilized for the comic-novels back in the 70’s.
It was a hybrid between comic and novel, where the narration developed through text blocks, which were completed by illustrations. Matt developed for these illustrations quite a clean and luminous style, with an important ornamental load –he even used it in secondary aspects, such as the panel’s ledges–.
The final art made a big contrast compared to the beginner look that his first stories with the character had had.
