Tiempos modernos  1936 Charlie Chaplin

In these unmodern and stale times

Modern Times - 1936 - Charlie Chaplin

The other day, my friend Larry advocated the need for an active popular reaction to the dismantling, by public authorities, of the minimal social structures of equality and protection we have been able to provide ourselves within this interim period of democracy.

I don't share that line of reaction, despite disbelieving in delegating my protection to elected officials or apathetic public servants. I don't resort to the public health service to alleviate my mild malaises; I choose to take care of myself or endure them. I believe that the tool we humble people have to avoid feeling like "tools of the System" is, individually, self-care. Collectively, we must resort to solidarity among equals and support those in harsher situations than we are.

¡Oh, maravilla!

¡Cuántas criaturas buenas hay aquí!

¡Qué hermosa es la Humanidad! ¡Oh, mundo feliz,

que alberga a estas personas!

William Shakespeare: «La tempestad», acto V.

Storms that anticipate happiness

Our society has spent centuries instilling in our intellect the excellence of artifice. Educational distortion seeks to train students into unquestioningly repeating the doctrines instilled in them. Institutions seek to mold adults who live the tight lives dictated by institutional statistics. The System seeks to ensure that, at any age, our lives unfold linearly according to a perfect plan drawn up by the powers that be.

But with perfection, it's like with joy: if it were omnipresent, it would lose its meaning.

Neither you nor I would want to live in the brave new world fictionalized by Aldous Huxley—where happiness is only achieved by crossing the gates of perfection—do we, Reader?

O wonder!

How many goodly creatures are there here!

How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,

That has such people in't.

William Shakespeare: "The Tempest", Act V.

On Clockwork Oranges and Other Intellectual Artifices

The other day, a classmate in a literary workshop pointed out that the only way for a creative text to be perfectly written was if it had been sifted through the machine language of an Artificial Intelligence. Thus, she used documents created by an AI as a template for her literary creations.

My comment was that the text would probably have the charm of a clockwork orange and would cause in its reader a "Ludovico effect" similar to the one that made the homicidal "Alex," conceived by Anthony Burgess, become a social icon. A text created by AI can be judged perfect according to academic canons; and its realism will perfectly adjust to the technical utopias that constitute artistic genres. But creativity is chaos, dystopia, imperfection.

Seeing the bored expressions my classmates displayed, I concluded my digression. I apologized for my vehemence and proposed that we continue with our fair of vanities and artifices.
